NICARAGUA | Media Crackdown
Central America is not a good region generally for press freedom, and in Nicaragua, the position is increasingly perilous.
President Daniel Ortega – yes, he of the Sandinista movement that vexed Ronald Reagan in the 1980s – has, in the past few years, used violence to shore up his power against angry opposition. The media is a key battleground and, as Unreported World correspondent Sahar Zand discovers on the ground in Nicaragua, independent journalism is a dangerous business amid civil disruption and economic chaos. This film visits the newsroom of the country's oldest newspaper, independent TV studios and a blogger's home, as well as reporters who have decided to flee the country.
